Why Urdu

Why translate English videos into Urdu?

English-language creators, schools and companies translate their videos because four in five people on earth don't speak English, and most of them would rather watch in their own language.

Urdu is Pakistan's national language and is understood by about 246 million people. Pakistan's population of more than 240 million is young and increasingly online, and Urdu speakers in the UK and the Gulf add a large audience abroad.

  • Creators and educators reaching Pakistan
  • Brands marketing to Urdu speakers in the Gulf and the UK
  • Faith, education and community content

What changes from English to Urdu

Close to spoken Hindi

Everyday spoken Urdu and Hindi are largely mutually understood. Formal vocabulary differs (Persian and Arabic roots in Urdu, Sanskrit in Hindi), and so do the scripts.

Right-to-left Nastaliq

Urdu is written right to left, traditionally in the flowing Nastaliq style. The SRT and VTT files contain Urdu text that players display right to left.

Aap for an audience

Like Hindi, Urdu uses the respectful aap for 'you'; it is the norm when addressing viewers, so watch the first dub to confirm the tone.

Coming from English

English is compact: the same idea usually takes more words in Spanish, French or German, and localization teams plan for 15–35% longer text. AutoDub lets the timing stretch slightly instead of speeding the voice up, so the translated speech keeps a natural pace.
